"This is the place?" Gwyar asked his companion, his gaze narrowed at the cavern's mouth leading deep into the chilling deathtrap from where he sat atop his Celestia-lookin' Rapidash.

Zac Ramsay was a man whom he was only passingly acquainted with. Despite their combined efforts to defeat the Grand Dragon, their meeting before arriving at Shoal Cave was their first time speaking to one another properly.

He didn't know much of him beyond the fact that he was a gym leader. Gwyar was terrible with social media, so Zac's famous Vlog was at best something the blonde's daughters might have watched in his presence at some point.

"Let us hurry- who knows what could've happened to her!" He said as he pulled on the reigns of Llamrei, the Rapidash reeling back and neighing before trotting into the cavern's mouth.

Why had these two men come together? One simple reason.

The Dragon had called. Her daughter had not made it home in time for her bedtime story. michiko maeda was missing (according to her mother).

No time to waste.

    Shoal Cave was freezing, but at least Zac was dressed the part. With his luxurious Golden Explorer's Jacket, he was a flaming beacon of warmth mounted on an absolute beast of a stallion: Fango the Mudsdale.
        Fango, however, was not having such a great time. Zac had fitted him out in a matching red and gold caparison, and was hoping that it would be enough. A sparse crop of coral bells bloomed in Mudsdale's mane, adding spots of purple and crimson. "This is it, man. The one and only Shoal Cave," Zac confirmed "home to over fifty species of Pokemon that are rare as Torchic teeth anywhere else." Zac said, as he sent out his Minior.
    The three orbs cracked on the ice and rose into the air, exteriors falling away so that their cores washed the cavern entrance in cold luminance.
    Wrapped, lit, mounted and keen, Zac urged Fango onwards, through the icy arch and into the caves proper. Seated on the oversized horse, Zac had to duck to get through.
A glance around the open, rimed area killed Zac's hopes of a straight shot to Michi.
    "Davenport, Lucretia, with us," Zac ordered the orbs "Barry Bluejeans, see if you can find any traces of Michi."
    The orb picking one of the half-dozen connecting tunnels and zipped off, blue light vanishing into the caves.
Zac scanned the area for any signs of the lost woman, but without the sound of jangling Pyroar charms, the bright colors of her commemorative tote bags, or a trail of Petalburg Apples, he was momentarily stumped. "Hey Gwyar, you got any experience with this stuff mate?"

The blonde man nodded, his lip curling ever so slightly. He couldn't share details, being undercover and all, but this was not his first time in a search party.

"It is unfortunate, but I've no canine pokemon on me to assist us." He said, brow furrowed as he thumbed one of his many pokeballs... "No, that's not quite right."

He unclipped the pokeball from his belt, staring at it uncertainly for a moment before nodding. Throwing it out, it released-!

"Riooou!"

The man's hands immediately snatched the little canine's ears before it could start running around, his thumbs running soothingly over them as he spoke.

The Riolu seemed determined to get moving regardless however, excitedly looking around. Finally! He had been released for battle! At last, he could show his worth as a true warr-

"We are searching for Michiko, Raki." Gwyar said, slapping the little Riolu upside the head with the facts. The tiny pokemon's brow twitched slightly at that, looking at the blonde man blankly.

Why was it always the lady?

Gwyar squeezed his ears gently, drawing his attention back to him.

"I need you to focus. You were with her for a long time... Can you feel her aura?"

Raki nibbled on the inside of his cheek for a moment, before nodding. This was... technically heroic. If he could manage it. His eyes fluttered close as he tried to focus on his surroundings, brow furrowing in concentration.

When Gwyar sent out Raki, it gave Zac an idea. It's easy to forget that Michi has Pokemon. She's so full of that gentle, civilian aura that they seem like accessories most of the time.
He trotted over to one of the branching tunnels and peered inside. Lucretia's violet light slid along the warped, unbroken walls of the tunnel. Not this one.
The second tunnel was equally as dull, and the third was filled with white, salty rubble, which Fango licked eagerly. Zac pulled the Mudsdale away, and on the fourth tunnel there was a breakthrough. Literally.
The iced walls had been shattered. Broken in a hundred places by a flurry of pneumatic punches. "She went this way!" Zac called. He leant down to inspect the holes. The top of the holes were ridged with knuckle marks, indicative of the frustrated activity of a familiar figure: Matchan.

"Keep focusing, Raki." Said Gwyar as he scooped up the small Riolu before leaping atop Llamrei, patting her beautiful fur gently before shouting after Zac. "Coming!"

The sound of the Rapidash's hooves upon the stone soon filled the caverns as she caught up to Zac's Mudsdale, bringing Gwyar to see the remnants of Matchan's handywork.

"Why would Michiko order this?" The blonde man wondered, brows furrowed in confusion.

Of course, that was assuming she had ordered it. Could something have perhaps forced Matchan to make a path forward?

The thought was terrifying.

"Let's go!" The blonde man said, suddenly in a rush. Llamrei broke into a trot, charging down the punched out path.

Raki wasn't terribly used to utilizing his innate aura abilities yet. He would have evolved by now if he were; Gwyar was quite literally putting him on the spot now.

And Raki was far too stubborn to just give up. He focused, as hard as he could, on the familiar essence that was the lady... but no matter what, he couldn't seem to find anything. He had never had any trouble finding her before... And it had only been a week since they had parted ways.

Was she that far inside?!

The mismatched sound of horse hooves clattered down the icy tunnel. The two gallant men at the reins pushed their steeds as fast as was safe across the uneven path. "Maybe she didn't order it," Zac said, which was an even scarier prospect.
"What if she was attacked? What if Matchan got spooked? He can't do anything against a ghost type..."
Zac lapsed into troubled thought as the path became too rocky to progress. Massive, white boulders of salt-rock blocked the passage, perhaps dislodged from somewhere up above.
The walls were mostly smooth here, aside from a series of thin, deep holes, that punctured the ice in an arc, up and over the boulder. Now what could that be? Is there something chasing Michi? We have to move faster.
"I've got this one," Zac said, and he tugged on Fango's reins. The steed reared up, smashing back down with its hooves and shattering the nearest boulder into as much chunky white powder. Zac set to work smashing through the rest of the boulders. "No luck with Raki yet?"

He and Zac seemed to be thinking along the same lines- which made it feel more real. Not good. Not good at all.

And of course Matchan was not trained to deal with Ghosts; Michiko had no need for such measures. The man nearly bit through his lip, squeezing the reigns.

As Zac and his Mudsdale barreled through a barrier of Ice, the larger man's question prompted Gwyar to glance down at the Riolu, who held his temples tightly with a scrunched up face of focus.

"Rioou...!" No matter what, he couldn't find anything! If he didn't know any better, he would have thought the Lady wasn't there at all!

"No... He cannot find her." He said, brows pinched with worry. "But it doesn't make sense... even the youngest and most inexperienced of Riolu can locate their trainers' aura over distances..."

Even if he was his trainer now, Raki had spent most a much longer time with Michiko- there was no way he could have forgotten her signature in such a short time.

"... Wait." The man said, pulling on the reigns of his Rapidash firmly to bring her to a stop. He blinked for a moment, lips pursing.

"Er... Did you try calling Michiko before coming here?" He said after a moment, turning his gaze towards Zac.

Gwyar, uh... Hadn't. At the Dragon's own call, he had immediately set out.

"Why would I call her?" Zac asked, as the pair galloped down the cleared hallway. They reached a fork, went left, hit a dead end, and turned around. "She's lost! You don't call people who are lost. You find them!"
Zac rode on, pushing Fango harder down the tight, corridors.
"Besides, she definitely came this way! We found Matchan's punch marks on the wall back there, right." The paths split again, this time one heading down into the dark heart of the caves, and the other angling upwards. The path upwards had a whisper of breeze. "Or are you saying she's already left?"

"R- right?!" He said at Zac's words, nodding fervently. Yes, yes! You did not just call a missing person. You went looking for them! Immediately!

Provided your sources on their disappearance were trustworthy!

"Um. That's not quite what I mean, no." The blonde man said as he brought his hands to his chin. "Suppose, hypothetically... That the Dragon- er, Michiko's mother... might have, um, exaggerated?"

What had she said again...?

'Vistike nud vissick! Sko nud raxato bel vupp fodsido chelupp!'

Silently, Gwyar pulled out his smartphone and dialed a familiar number, it ringing for a moment before it was picked up. A moment later...

"There was a very long line at the Supermarket." He said blankly.
